Selling a junk car should be quick. A little preparation helps. This checklist covers the usual steps; rules can change and every situation differs, so confirm details with the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles department (FLHSMV) or your county tax collector's office.
What to have ready
- The title, signed by the owner(s) listed on it.
- Your photo ID.
- Lien information, if you ever had a loan on the car. A lender may need to release the lien before the car can be sold.
Before the tow truck arrives
- Take your personal items out of the car, including the glove box and trunk.
- Remove any toll transponder such as a SunPass.
- Take off your license plate. In Florida the plate generally stays with the owner, not the vehicle, so ask your tax collector's office what to do with it.
- Cancel or update the insurance after the sale is complete.
After the sale
Florida asks sellers to report the sale to FLHSMV, which protects you from tickets or tolls on a car you no longer own. Keep a copy of any bill of sale or receipt.
What if I lost the title?
If you are the owner, you can usually request a duplicate title from FLHSMV. If you cannot, call us. Depending on the vehicle and your documents, there may still be a way to sell. We will tell you honestly what is needed before we schedule a pickup. See also our page on cars without a title.
